Minister Lipavský Met with His Counterpart Fidan in Ankara

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský visited the Turkish capital on Tuesday 25 June 2024. He opened the programme by paying tribute to the memory of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He then held talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. They discussed, among other things, Czech-Turkish relations, the Russian war in Ukraine and migration issues. Afterwards, Minister Lipavský visited the Turkish Parliament, where he held talks with its Speaker Numan Kortulmuş. The Minister’s programme ended with a meeting with representatives of Turkish civil society.

Minister Lipavský opened his official visit by laying a wreath at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the father of the modern Turkish state. He also discussed with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan the mutual Czech-Turkish diplomatic relations, which celebrate their centenary this year. Other topics of the meeting included Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and the solution to the migration crisis. “I would like to thank Turkey very much for all the support it has given to the brave Ukrainians so far and I appreciate it very much. Helping Ukraine is helping Czechia and the whole of Europe,” the Czech diplomatic chief told a press conference.

This was followed by a meeting with the President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Numan Kortulmuş, with whom he discussed current geopolitical issues and the possibilities of cooperation between the Czech and Turkish parliaments. “Our closer cooperation in the field of fundamental values, security issues or foreign policy would undoubtedly strengthen and bring us closer together. After all, it has been 25 years since we have been together in an alliance,” the minister added.

At the end of his visit, the Minister attended a reception to mark the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations. The main guests on the Turkish side included Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş. On the sidelines of the reception, the Minister met for a discussion with representatives of Turkish civil society.
