On 8 July, the European Union delivered a modern, Croatian-manufactured demining machine to Armenia – the first of two planned.
“By strengthening Armenia’s mine clearance capacity, the EU is further contributing to Armenia’s resilience and regional peace, as well as human security and normalisation of life in border areas, marking a significant step forward in regional security and infrastructure development,” the EU Delegation to Armenia posted on Facebook.
The donation aims to boost Armenia’s mine clearance capacity, directly benefiting conflict-affected communities.
EU Ambassador to Armenia Vassilis Maragos also announced that the EU plans to construct three new border crossing points in the country. While the exact locations of these crossings have not yet been disclosed, Maragos noted that clearing the land is the essential first step before construction can begin.
“Connectivity projects require clearing the areas through which they will pass,” Maragos told reporters during the official handover ceremony held in Yerevan.“Demining will be the first essential step to allow these important construction works to move forward.”
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the European Union to deepen its cooperation with Armenia through tangible investments in both security and infrastructure. The EU currently supports conflict-affected areas through various programmes, including the work of the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA). For this demining project, the EU is partnering directly with the Armenian Humanitarian Demining and Expertise Center to save lives and pave the way for future economic growth.
