President of the European Parliament Robert Metzola spoke at the EPS Summit in Yerevan in such a way that for a moment an uncomfortable silence was noticeable.

When she was criticized by the President of Azerbaijan, she did not go into the diplomatic hemisphere.

Resolutions of the European Parliament may create discomfort for many, but we will never change our way of working or the position we adopt. This was the response of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to the accusation made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who claimed that the European Parliament undermines the peace process instead of supporting it.

This accusation and response were voiced on May 4 during the 8th summit of the European Political Community (EPC) held in Yerevan.

Participating in the summit via video link, Ilham Aliyev stated that from May 2021 to April 30, 2026, the European Parliament had adopted 14 resolutions against Azerbaijan, which, according to him, contain insults and false information.

“In response, on May 1, the Azerbaijani Parliament officially decided to suspend cooperation with the European Parliament in all areas, to cease participation in the EU–Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and to initiate procedures to withdraw from the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly,” Ilham Aliyev said.

Responding to the accusations during the summit, President Metsola stated:

“The European Parliament is a democratic body composed of directly elected representatives. Its resolutions are adopted by majority vote, and their outcomes may create discomfort for many, but we will never change our way of working or the position we adopt.”

P.S. Ilham Aliyev, joining the summit online, returned to the usual rhetoric about “bias of European institutions”, “separatism” and “closed issue of 2023”. The formulations are familiar, almost refined by time, but that doesn’t make them closer to reality.
