Strasbourg, 10.06.2025 – Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset will visit Armenia on 11–12 June for a series of meetings. The Secretary General will meet with President Vahagn Khachaturyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan, and Minister of Justice Srbuhi Galyan. He will also deliver a public lecture and meet students at Yerevan State University.

The visit comes at a critical time for the South Caucasus. The Secretary General will reiterate the Council of Europe’s support for the swift signature of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a message he conveyed directly to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Ilham Aliyev during the European Political Community Summit in Tirana in May, where he stated: “The peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan are highly important. We must work together to make the best possible decisions for regional stability.”

Equally important is the Council of Europe’s work in supporting Armenia’s ongoing democratic reforms. Through its Action Plan for Armenia 2023-2026, with an initial budget of €19 million, and a new €2.8 million response package, the Council of Europe is helping to strengthen institutions, human rights protections, and the resilience of host communities responding to refugee flows.

With Armenia set to host the 8th Summit of the European Political Community in the spring of 2026, discussions will also focus on how the Council of Europe can contribute to strengthening the region’s role in Europe’s emerging democratic security architecture.
